Why Merino Wool doesn't stink!

Why Merino Wool doesn't stink!
Ever wondered how Merino wool stays fresh even after repeat wears? Here’s the easy-to-grasp science behind it. No lab coat required.

  • Merino drinks up moisture vapour. Each fibre is hygroscopic, pulling water vapour away from your skin and keeping the surface drier meaning less of the warm, humid micro-climate that odour-causing bacteria love.

  • Its protein core traps odour molecules. Merino is made of keratin (like your hair). Odorous compounds from sweat are drawn into the fibre’s internal structure and held there until you wash so you smell less betweenwashes.

  • Less stink than synthetics in head-to-head tests. Multiple studies report wool retaining noticeably less malodour than polyester after wear, even when bacterial counts are similar, pointing to Merino’s superior odour-sorption rather than “antibacterial chemicals.”

A 60-second deep dive

When sweat sits on typical synthetic fabrics (like polyester), it stays on the surface where bacteria break it down into smelly acids. Because synthetics are hydrophobic, those odour molecules linger at the surface and hit your nose quickly.

Merino behaves differently. Its scaly outer layer allows water vapour to pass through, and its keratin-rich cortex absorbs odour molecules into the fibre interior. Result: drier fabric next to skin, fewer “food and spa” conditions for bacteria, and malodours that are locked in until laundering. That’s why Merino often smells fresher after multiple wears than a synthetic worn once.

What this means for you

  • Fewer washes between wears (good for your time and the planet).
  • More comfort across temperatures (Merino buffers humidity next to skin).
  • Naturally fresh—no added chemical finishes required.
If you’ve been curious why our Merino pieces stay fresh on the trail, in the gym, or on long trips—that’s the science.

Want to put it to the test? Wear your Merino tee for a few sessions before washing. Your nose will notice.
